M. Phil & Ph.D.

Dravidian University was established by the Government of Andhra Pradesh through a Legislative Act (No.17 of 1997) at Kuppam, a tri-lingual junction in the south-western part of Andhra Pradesh with the initial support extended by the governments of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala for an integrated development of Dravidian languages, thus paving way for cultural and emotional integration among all the regions that carry forward the ancient historical torch of the nation.

Dravidian university offers the following programmes through two distinct modes given below:

  1. Campus Mode: The students have to register by passing the entrance test / viva-voce in any of the Departments of the University and should put in campus residency (details are given through separate brochure).

    1. M.Phil-Ph.D. (Integrated)
    2. Ph.D. Fulltime & Part-time.

  2. Off Campus Mode (Part-time only): Dravidian University is offering admissions into M.Phil & Ph.D Programmes in Off Campus mode in the following subjects.

Eligibility:
  • M. Phil: The candidate should possess 50% marks in the subject concerned in postgraduate level.
  • Ph.D: The candidate should possess
    • Masters Degree with minimum 50% of marks in the subject concerned and
    • M.Phil with 50% marks in the concerned subject.
    • M.Phil degree is exempted if the candidate has Cleared NET/SLET or has published at least two research articles in reputed journals.
Duration:
  • For M.Phil: A Minimum of 18 months, and Maximum of 3 yrs
  • For Ph.D: A Minimum of 2 years, and Maximum of 5 years. In the case of failure to submit thesis within five years, the candidate has to go for re-registration.
Fees:
  • Fee for M.Phil in all subjects except Education, Management and Journalism is Rs.10,000/- per annum. For Education, Management and Journalism fee is Rs.12,000/- per annum.

  • Fee for Ph.D in all subjects except Education, Management & Journalism is Rs.12,000/- p.a. For Education, Management & Journalism the fee is Rs.15,000/- p.a.

Research Guide:
  • Every applicant has to submit the consent letter of a qualified guide expressing his/her willingness to supervise the research work, along with the application form without which admission would be deferred.

Qualifications of a Guide:
  • For M. Phil: A qualified guide to supervise M. Phil dissertation must possess Ph. D in the subject concerned in which the candidate is seeking admission.

  • For Ph. D: A qualified guide to supervise a Ph. D thesis must possess Ph. D in the subject concerned in which the candidate is seeking admission. He should also possess a total of five years of teaching experience, out of which 3 yrs should be after getting his/her Ph.D.

  • The guides have to give an undertaking that they are willing to guide the students till the completion of the submission of the dissertation/thesis by the candidate and will not withdraw in the middle for any reasons and will not demand any additional remuneration from the candidates. The candidate need not pay any other amount to any other agency or individual other than the fee prescribed by the University.

Allotment of students:
  • A Maximum number of 6 Ph.D candidates would be allotted to a qualified guide out of which 4 would be allotted at one time, not exceeding 6 at any time.

  • If a guide has given consent to more than four, the candidates would be allotted on merit basis by the University.

  • One Ph.D seat is equal to 2 M. Phil seats with respect to their allotment to guide.

  • The research guide is supposed to submit a list of panel of examiners with not less than 10 names for the evaluation of the thesis.

Remuneration:

A research supervisor would receive an honorarium of Rs.1000/- & Rs.1500/- per annum for guiding M. Phil & Ph. D works respectively after the submission of the thesis by the candidate.

Course work:

M.Phil candidates and the Ph.D candidates who joined the course without M.Phil have to write an examination after the completion of Six months from the time of admission. The examination, which would be held at specified centres, would comprise TWO papers.

  • Research Methodology –
  • Broad field of specialization
  • In lieu of the third paper the candidates have to submit TWO research papers related to their topic of dissertation of not less than 15 pages and/or 3000 words on the last day of the examinations. The research papers would be valued for 50 marks each by an expert committee constituted by the University. Selected and recommended papers would be published in the University Journal.

Each paper would be for 100 marks and of 3 hrs duration. The qualifying mark is 50%.

All the M. Phil. & Ph. D. candidates have to submit a brief synopsis of their topic within two months of their admission. All the PhD students have to submit a report of the progress of their research work duly counter- signed by the guide every Six months.

Only after clearing the Part – 1 examinations, the candidates would be allowed to submit their theses/dissertations.

Adjudication:

The research work completed under the guidance of a specified guide has to be submitted any time after the completion of the minimum period of time mentioned above. If the submission is delayed beyond the specified maximum period, the student has to pay penal fee which would vary from time to time.

The candidates have to submit 5 copies of their dissertation/thesis to the University along with the stipulated adjudication fee and other fees at the time of submission.

In the event of the return of the dissertation/ thesis, the concerned candidate has to revise/rewrite as per the suggestions made by the external examiner and resubmit it within six months from the date of receipt of the returned dissertation from the University.

There will be a Viva-voce for Ph.D; for M.Phil candidates there is no Viva-Voce.

Advanced programmes of Research
D. Lit. & D. Phil Programmes

In order to promote advanced research in Dravidian Studies and related areas, the Dravidian University is offering the following programmes of Research through Off-campus mode in Dravidian languages, History, Philosophy, Culture, and Indian Society and Civilization in general with emphasis on comparative and inter-disciplinary approaches. The Programmes are designed specially to cater to the academic enthusiasm of senior scholars with a footing of their own in their specialized fields of knowledge and who wish to continue their research pursuits.

D. Lit.

Eligibility:
  1. Ph. D. in the concerned subject and
  2. A minimum of 10 years of experience in teaching or any other related area and
  3. A minimum 20 published articles in recognized research journals OR
    TWO research works of not less than 200 pages each other than Ph.D.

Course Details:

  • Should register on a new topic other than that of their Ph.D.
  • Should work independently of the Research Guide.
  • Should submit the thesis for evaluation
  • Should present a seminar before an expert committee or submit a research paper once in 6 months (at least two seminars are must before the submission of the thesis).

Duration:

      A minimum of TWO years and a maximum period of FIVE years.

Fee:

      Rs. 16,000/- pa

Note: If the candidate is willing to submit the thesis after the completion of one year and before the completion of the minimum period, a special evaluation would be conducted by the experts for the eligibility of the research work for submission, on payment of special fee of Rs. 3,000/- in addition to the regular fee.

D. Phil.

Eligibility:

  1. M.A. in the concerned subject
  2. A minimum of 5 years of experience in teaching or in any other relevant area, and
  3. A minimum of 5 published articles in recognized research journals OR
    ONE research work of not less than 200 pages.

Course Details:

  • Should register on a new topic other than that of their published work.
  • Should work independently of the Research Guide.
  • Should submit the thesis for evaluation.
  • Should present a seminar before an expert committee or submit a research paper once in 6 months (at least two seminars are must before the submission of the thesis).

Duration:

      A minimum of TWO years and a maximum period of FIVE years.

Fee:

      Rs. 12,000/- pa

Note: If the candidate is willing to submit the thesis after the completion of one year and before the completion of the minimum period, a special evaluation would be conducted by the experts for the eligibility of the research work for submission, on payment of special fee of Rs. 3,000/- in addition to the regular fee.
