Bishop Caldwell Dravidian E-Resources Centre
(central library)

            The Library is assisting the University to promote Dravidian studies especially in the fields of comparative literature, religion, sociology, culture and indigenous science and national integration.

Library Building
The present library is housed temporarily in “Narayanaguru Bhavan” one of the biggest buildings of the University with  all the facilities.

Staff of the Library
The Library is managed by one qualified library professional with the other library professionals on contract basis. As on today one Librarian I/c, 5 Professionals and 5 supporting staff are working.
Timings
Kept open from 8.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. on all working days and Sundays. On all public holidays,  from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.

Circulation Section
This is a pivot of the library besides extending transaction facilities to its readers. The Teaching staff, Non-teaching staff, research scholars and students are its members.
It renders extension service to the researcher scholars and teaching staff by getting the books and other reading materials from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. on all working days.
Members are provided borrowing of books facility through ledger system : Professors 10 books, Associate Professors 8, Assistant Professors 6, Contract Lecturers 5, Research Scholars 5, Post-Graduate Students 3 and  Under-Graduate Students 2.
Acquisition Section
The physical book stock of the library grows continuously by section procuring books, back volumes of periodicals, microfilms, and rare collection of books etc. in quotation  calling  method.

Periodical Subscription Policy
The Indian and foreign periodicals are being subscribed through agency obtaining subscription rates from the agents. The foreign periodicals are  subscribed through the agency for foreign periodicals.
The library is proposes to subscribe Indian as well as foreign  ones periodically utilizing the UGC grants and  the annual budget every year. The University has requested the UGC for providing  a grant of 25 lakhs for nearly 57 journals especially for Foreign Journals.

Technical Section
The library follows Dewey Decimal Classification. The book numbers are given using the Cutter’s table. Books are catalogued according to AACR-2. Library of congress subject headings are used for providing subject headings.

 Stack Area
The Stack area is spread to half of the building.  Books on Philosophy, Religion, Social Sciences, Language, Sciences, Technology, Fine Arts, Literature and Geography and History are arranged in the stack area.

Languages
Books about 18000 volumes in Dravidian languages like Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam and Thulu etc. are kept separately in the stack area.

Text book section
Multiple copies of the standard text books on different subjects are  kept in this section on the recommendations of the respective heads of the departments mainly for consultation by the students and staff.

Reference section
This section provides general books, dictionaries, geographical and biographical sources, almanacs, handbooks etc.

Quick Reference (Dictionaries and Encyclopedias)
This section provides general and subject encyclopedias, dictionaries and other reference sources.

Display of Archives Manuscripts
Rare collection of coins, photographs, plates, stamps, prints, clay tablets,  palm leaves, ancient documents, wood carvings, stone-carvings and old ornaments etc. are preserved and displayed in the protected  area at the library. These collections reveal the culture, tradition, lifestyle and education of the old for their remembrance.

Internet Centre
For the benefit of the students, research scholars and staff of Dravidian University, internet facility has been provided to update knowledge and to utilize electronic information services in the library.

Reprography Service
Providing reprography service to its users by charging 0.50 paise per exposure.

Library books collection (up to 2006-2007)
The library has procured subject and general books (reference and general stack) during the period 1997-1998 to 2006-2007 a total number of  50000 volumes worth  2.2 cores. The backup details section wise are as follows :

Library Automation
            The Library Automation work has been under taken and 15000 volumes are entered.

Procurement of books year wise

Books purchased during the year 1997-1998 to 2001-2002 works out to 23870 volumes. During the year 2002-03, 6471 volumes were added to the collection. During the year 2003-04, 3830 volumes enriched the collection. 1692 volumes were purchased during the year 2004-05 and added to the collection. During the year 2005-06, 5552 volumes  were procured ;  8585 volumes were purchased during the year 2006-07 and the thus total collection upto 2006-07 comes to 50,000 volumes.
