The Department of Tamil and Translation Studies was started with one Professor and three Assistant Professors on 25 .12.2005 .

Department Activities
The Department of Tamil Language and Translation Studies, Dravidian University, undertakes the following major academic activities.

1. Teaching and Research Activities
a.) M.A Program: At Present there are nine students (first year 4 students and second year 5students )studying Tamil literature and Language.
b.) PhD Program: University has offered full time and Part time Ph.D programs in Tamil language and literature . At present 5 scholars are doing full-time PhD and 7 scholars have enrolled for Part-time PhD. Dr. Carlos, Dr. D. Boologarambai and Dr.T.Vishnukumaran give guidance to concerned scholars.
C.) M.Phil Program : University has also offeredM.Phil course. After submission of thesis candidates are admitted to Ph.D. Already three M.Phil Students have completed the course.
d.) Certificate and Diploma courses : University has offered Certificate and Diploma courses for non- Tamilians . At present 15 students are studying the certificate course in Tamil.
2. Weekly Research Review Programmes
Three research review programs are held every week .
a. THALIR :
This program is held every Tuesday from 2.00.pm. to 3.oo. One Assistant Professor or research scholar or MA student is offered a chance to present his / her research article .
b. A GENERAL REVIEW OF CLASS LESSONS BY ALL THE TEACHERS
This program is held every Wednesday from 2.00.pm. to 3.00 p.m. The MA students explain the subject taught to them in the classes. After that the professor , assistant professors and research scholars explain the important points of the concerned subject , from their point of view.
c. PUTHIYANA PUKUTHAL :
Each week one Assistant Professor or Research Scholar or a Student introduces a newly published book . The audience express their opinion on the book.
3. Meet A Literary Personality
Every month one literary personality (a writer or publisher or teacher of literature)is invited to the Department to be. The invited literary personalities are PREM RAMESH, DEVARAJAN and MANONMANI.
4. Department Projects
TITLE: A PREPARATION OF MOTIF INDEX OF SANGAM THEMES
This is an unique research work. Under the guidance of Dr. Carlos, Professor and the Head of the department this work has been successfully carried out by all the Assistant professors and a Junior Research Fellow.
This research project aims to prepare an Index of Sangam themes from different aspects. When the preparation of Index will be completed, it will be a resource material for literary scholars and others to know the different themes and techniques of Sangam literature.
INDIVIDUAL PROJECTS:
i.) Title: Teaching Materials for Foreign students Tamil.
Investigator: Dr.S. Carlos , Head of the Tamil Dept.
This project is submitted recently to Dravidian University.
ii.) Title: Tamil-Telugu Interlingual Translation- A Bibliography.
Investigator: Dr. A.Boologarambai.
- It is a statement on the current status of research indicating the strong and weak points in
the development of research.
- It systematically lists out all the available materials and reveals the knowledge available.
iii) Title: Translation of kumara Catakam
Investigator: Dr. A.Boologarambai.
iv) Title : The healing System Of Varmam in kanyakumari
Investigator: Dr. T.Vishnukumaran.
Varmam is a traditional treatment system practiced successfully more than 1000 years.
