Tulu is a major Language of the Dravidian family. The Tulu Language and Culture are the integral part of Karnataka. There are significant works on Tulu Language, culture and History by Kannada scholars.The recent research revealed that the history of Tulu literature goes back to 14th Century. Tulu has adopted Kannada script for writing and documentation.
With this background the Department of Tulu Language and translation studies has started its activities under the Co – ordinate ship of Dr. B.S. Shivakumar.
The main purpose of establishing a Dept. for Tulu Studies is to concentrate on the study of Tulu culture and literature including the publication of valuable research works on Tulu studies. The translation of Vemana verses of Telugu into Tulu has been taken up and published in a book form under the Department.
Aims and Objectives
The main objectives of the department are:
Preservation of cultural, linguistics and literary heritage of Tulu
Preparation of Tulu readers
Training programme for Tulu teachers
Organizing writers workshop for promotion of writing in Tulu
The department Intends to translate Tulu Folk Epics and PaDdanas into other Dravidian languages.
To bring out a comprehensive history of Tulu literature.
It also intends to study the recent trends in Tulu Yakshagana.
To prepare an exhaustive bibliography of Tulu Studies
